During a meeting between the Shinsengumi, Mimawarigumi and Katsura's Jouishishi faction in a temple, Katsura suggested them leaving Edo and going hiding due to current political condition under Nobu Nobu's reign and the fact that the Shinsengumi had become a symbol of the rebellion.
Before leaving, Kondou, Hijikata and Okita met each member of the Yorozuya to bid farewell. Despite their insistence, the Yorozuya chose to stay in Edo. At the Shimuras' dojo, Otae and Shinpachi promised to welcome Kondou as a normal person. Meanwhile, Okita and Kagura had a fight before parting to decide who was the stronger as both of them swearing to be stronger so as not to lose to anyone else.
In a familiar pub, Gintoki offered Hijikata a drink, but he refused and promised to pay their debt to the Yorozuya for reminding them of something they had forgotten. Though, Gintoki claimed that it was him who got it back. When their food was served, the two swapped their dishes, only to find the other's food disgusting, yet they still burst out laughing happily.
Departing from Edo, the Shinsengumi swore to become samurai of Edo when returned, with Kondou noting that the end of their true path is still far off.
