IntroductionEdit

The Kansei Purge was a series of purges conducted by Tokugawa Sada Sada and the Bakufu on the instructions of the Tendoushuu during the decade long Joui Wars. Done all across Japan, it was meant to get rid of potential and actual dissidents that may try to rise up and fight against the Bakufu.

VictimsEdit

It is unknown how many were arrested and killed during this period, but the most notable in this story include:

Shouyo
Yoshida Shouyou
吉田 松陽
Hiraga-saburou mug
Hiraga Saburou
平賀 三郎

Aftermath Edit

Although Joui activity declined thanks to these purges, it paradoxically gave rise to a last wave of Joui rebellion that were lead by the Four Heavenly Kings (Sakata Gintoki, Katsura Kotarou, Takasugi Shinsuke, and latter addition Sakamoto Tatsuma). Despite this wave, the purge succeeded in weakening the Bakufu's enemies, leading to the Government/ Tendoushuu alliance winning the Joui Wars and forcing the remaining Joui activity underground for the next decade up to the present day.

Trivia Edit

  • The Kansei Purge is based on the Ansei Purge, when the late Tokugawa Shogunate expelled over one hundred high-ranking officials and nobles who were against the Shogunate's dealings with the United States and the European nations.
  • In Lesson 554, it is implied that the real reason Yoshida Shouyou was arrested and later executed was because he deserted from the organization who played a large part of conducting the purges, the Tenshouin Naraku. Being suspected of dissension was simply a bonus.
